Tell Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Markey: The Green New Deal must include basic income

Today, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey introduced legislation in Congress to create a Green New Deal in the United States. While the resolution states that we must provide economic security to all people in the United States, it stops short of saying that the way to do this is through basic income.1

Basic income was included in the original proposal for a Select Committee for a Green New Deal introduced by Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, so we know it’s on her radar.2 It’s critical that Ocasio-Cortez and Markey hear from people across the country that basic income is the only way to truly guarantee universal economic security.

Please include basic income in your Green New Deal legislation. We must provide economic security to EVERYONE, not just those engaged in traditional paid jobs.

Your Green New Deal bill says we must provide all people in the United States with economic security. Will you provide people with basic income to ensure this isn’t limited to just those with paid employment?
